KITULO NATIONAL PARK

Le parc national du plateau de Kitulo est un parc de Tanzanie qui se situe près de la rive orientale du Lac Malawi. Celui-ci a été créé en 2002 en même temps que le parc national de Saadani.

Why go to Kitulo National Park?

Situated at an altitude of 2600 metres between the rocky peaks of Kipengere, Poroto and the Livingston Mountains. The park is one of Africa’s most important nature reserves, with grasslands and forests. Botanists call it the “Serengeti of flowers”, which may give you an idea of the park’s appeal.

There are few large mammals in Kitulo National Park, as the flora dominates the landscape. The park is home to around 400 species of plants that live in the mountain meadows. The plateau is home to more than 45 species of orchid, aloe, geophyte, etc. The dry season is from November to April, when the grasslands flower.

Hiking in Kitulo National Park

There are a number of good hiking trails, with the chance to wander through the meadows and observe the birds and wildflowers. You’ll also have the chance to climb the nearby peaks.

Kitulo National Park, rich in wildflowers, birds and herbivorous mammals, is a great place to hike in Tanzania. Several mountain tribes roam the park’s grasslands in search of orchids.

Kitulo’s animals

The forest is home to the Kipunji monkey, an endangered primate that Western zoologists barely discovered in 2003. But Kitulo is also a birdwatcher’s paradise. It is home to Tanzania’s only population of Denham’s bustard and is also home to rare species such as theblue swallow (an endangered species).

During your visit to the park, you will have the opportunity to observe a variety of animals, including :

  • Kipunji monkey
  • Chameleon
  • Birds and butterflies

When should you visit the Kitulo nature reserve?

The flowering period is from December to April. The sunny months of September to November are perfect for hiking, but less pleasant for botanists. From June to August, the weather is cold and cloudy.

How do I get to Kitulo National Park?

The best way to get to Kitulo is from Mbeya, which takes around 1? hours.

If you are travelling from Iringa, however, you will need to allow 5? hours for the journey.

Where to stay?

Kitulo National Park does not yet have any accommodation for travellers. However, you can find all kinds of accommodation in the town of Mbeya, from luxury hotels to bed and breakfasts. There are also special campsites for well-equipped campers.
