Le lac Eyasi est un lac salé peu profond qui se trouve au fond de la vallée du Grand Rift. Il est situé dans le nord de la Tanzanie, au sud des hauts plateaux du Ngorongoro.
Lake Eyasi lies at an altitude of 1030 m between the Eyasi cliffs and the Serengeti plains. It lies above sea level, unlike the savannahs and arid plains of the northern national parks. It offers travellers an extraordinary natural landscape.
Lake Eyasi does not attract a large game population, unlike the nearby parks and nature reserves. It is an idyllic spot for birdwatchers. A wide variety of breedingwaterfowl can be found around the lake from June to November. The main attraction is the large population of pink flamingos and great white pelicans.
Many hippos can be seen on Lake Eyasi, as well as :
Near the lake, you can meet the Hadzabe Bushmen, one of the few tribes to live as they did hundreds of years ago. As hunter-gatherers, they have an in-depth knowledge of the flora of their environment. The men hunt with homemade bows and arrows, while the women are responsible for gathering the fruit, plants and roots they use for food and medicine. Some are completely indifferent to strangers, while others are very friendly and are ready to show off their bows and demonstrate hunting and gathering techniques. Meet these Tanzanian people for an unforgettable experience!
You can visit the lake all year round.
However, from April to May, the rainy season begins, making it difficult to cross the hiking trails and roads.
However, to make the most of your visit, we recommend that you concentrate on the dry season, particularly January, February, June, July, August, September and October. Avoid April and May if possible, as hiking trails and paths can be impassable during the rainy season.
There are few means of transport to get to Lake Eyasi.
You can fly from Kilimanjaro airport, where you will pass over Lake Manyara.
It is also possible to land at Arusha airport and then drive there, a journey of around 4 hours.
Lake Eyasi is just a few kilometres from Karatu and close to Ngorongoro. The ideal lodge for us is the Ngorongoro Forest Tented Lodge. This charming accommodation is perfectly located if you want to visit the crater after your trip to Lake Eyasi.
