Lake Victoria was formed by depressions caused by the Great Rift through the high plateaux of East Africa. There are groups of islands on the lake, most of which are on the Ugandan side. These islands are almost all uninhabited. Only the islands of Mfangano and Ukerewe are inhabited. The largest island in Lake Victoria is Ukerewe, on the Tanzanian side. It is easily accessible by ferry from Mwanza, the country’s second-largest city.
