OLDUVAI GORGES

Située dans le nord de la Tanzanie dans la vallée du Grand Rift, les gorges d’Olduvai forment l’un des monuments préhistoriques les plus importants d’Afrique.

Sa superficie est d’environ 48 km de long et 89,9m de profondeur. C’est aujourd’hui le site archéologique et paléontologique le plus connu d’Afrique de l’Est.

Sa découverte a été faite en 1911 mais elle n’a été fouillée qu’en 1935 par les archéologues Mary et Louis Leakey.

Why visit the Olduvai Gorge?

To date, numerous discoveries, including at least 60 great ape fossils, point to the evolution of the human lineage, including those discovered by Leakey. The site shows occupations from 2 million years ago to around 15,000 BC.

The Olduvai Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracts many holidaymakers every year from all over the world.

It lies between the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Serengeti National Park.

The Serengeti is famous for the world’s largest annual wildebeest migration and its Big Five.

For archaeology enthusiasts, you won’t find a better place in Tanzania. With every step you take, you’ll feel the broken bones of animals fossilised millions of years ago.

At the edge of the canyon is a museum where visitors can discover the results of fossil digs, etc

When to visit?

The Olduvai Gorge can be visited all year round, but we recommend that you go between June and September.

You can get there by hiring a car and driver from Laetoli (45km) in Tanzania.
